12 Ways To Have A Healthy Mind

There is a reason Philippians 4 is my favorite chapter in the entire Bible.  This chapter gives me a healthy mind when I start having the symptoms of an unhealthy mind.  Every good Christian has felt the symptoms of an unhealthy mind coming on.  The battle is in the mind, so Philippians 4 is my weapon I use.  After all, the Bible is the two edged sword which cuts and defeats the problems of the mind.

What are the symptoms of an unhealthy mind?

  • Frustration
  • Worry
  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Self-Pity
  • Insomnia

How to Handle the Troubles of Life

Did you know the Olympic Games have included the 110 Meter Hurdles in their program since 1896?

As part of a racing event, ten hurdles are evenly spaced along a straight course of 110 meters. In today’s Olympics, the hurdles are positioned so they will fall over if bumped into by the runner. Fallen hurdles do not carry a fixed time penalty for the runners, but they have a significant pull-over weight which slows down the run. The 110 Meters Hurdles begin in the starting blocks.

The Bible compares our life to a race. Our race in life begins at the starting block of trusting Jesus Christ as Saviour. He has a good, straight and narrow path for each of us to follow.  But, there are hurdles in life we must face that can weigh us down and trip us up, before we reach the finish line.

How well we run the race of life is our choice.

It is more important how we handle the troubles of life than the actual hurdles we face. Here is how to be a better hurdle handler:

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”  Hebrews 12:1,2

Look unto Jesus! He is Faith and Patience in and through each of us! I can’t handle these hurdles in my life, but omnipotent Jesus can! I tell Him all about it and let Him take care of the hurdle! He gives me the strength and faith to leap over the hurdle! I picture the great cloud of witnesses as those in heaven cheering me on as I run the race.

What are some hurdles that weigh us down?

A Mom Is Amazing

1.   Disappointment

2.   Changes

3.   Problems

4.   Fears

5.   Failure

6.   Discouragement

7.   Worries

8.   Hurts

9.   Health

10. Bad Habits

Beginning well is a momentary thing.  Finishing well is a lifetime journey. Failure is not falling down.  Failure is when we stop trying to get up.

My choice: Am I going to give up, give in, or get up?
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.” Proverbs 24:16

All our hurdles are temporary.  All our troubles are getting us prepared for eternal glory where all our troubles will disappear. Jesus wants each of us to run the race of life and win! He will get us over the hurdles if we look to Him.

“Lord, help me to remember, everyone has a hurdle they are trying to get over. Lord, show me how to be a “lifter”, an encouragement to everyone I come in contact with this day. Lord, strengthen each reader of these words with Your power, so they will soar above their hurdles and win the race.”

To endure temptation and finish well is to receive from the Lord a crown at the finish line. Yes!!!

“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”  James 1:12

How To Have Confidence In A Fearful World

Meditate on Scriptures for confidence

I have a “favorite athlete” in the Olympics. Winning her event, a vibrant young lady was asked why she was so confident. “I meditate on Scriptures to be confident, and the Bible really helps me a lot.” After hearing this young lady’s answer, my husband and I looked at each other enthusiastically saying, “YES!” She knew the secret to confidence was in the Scriptures. Meditating on the Scriptures helped this young lady settle her nerves.

I can attest to this also. I am extremely timid when it comes to public speaking. When I meditate on Scriptures, God gives me strong confidence! I can do it! “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2Tim. 1:7   Having a sound mind is having a confident mind! God said it, so I believe it!

It is no coincidence that the center Scripture in the Bible is: “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.”  Psalm 118:8

The two center words in the entire Bible are “the LORD”.  Is the LORD the center of everything in my life? How about your life?

Children need to be taught: To remain faithful, put all your trust in the Lord. Man will disappoint you, so put all your confidence in God.

People drop out of church because they put their trust in a person who eventually disappoints them.  The main reason we wanted our children to read biographies of the heroes of faith was because we knew those people had finished well.

The secret to having confidence in a scary world:

  1. Trust in the Lord by meditating on Scriptures: By feeding your faith, you will starve your doubt. “For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.”  Proverbs 3:26
  2. Prayer: “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.” 1John 5:14,15
  3. Be filled with the Holy Spirit: We must have His Power! “Lord, I need you to fill me right now.  Live in and through me.” “And now, little children, abide (continually dwell) in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.” 1John 2:28
  4. We get confidence from being faithful to church on the Lord’s Day: “And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith.” Philippians 1:25   Paul knew the church needed preaching during a time of persecution to remain confident in Christ. We get confidence from hearing and heeding the preaching of God’s Word.  We get confidence in a fearful world by having fellowship with other believers in the local church. We need each other to stay strong.

Children need to know life circumstances do not have to shake their confidence.  Let us teach our children by example the secret to confidence! God has not given us a spirit of fear.  He said it!

We can smile today with hope knowing the worst problems in life were taken care of at the cross! We can smile today because you and I have the miraculous Resurrection Power within to live with bold confidence in a fearful world!

Lord, Help Me to Care About People Who Sit In Darkness

This morning as I read the Bible, the sun rose and light sprung up in darkness.

At the same time, I read this Scripture of the people in darkness who saw a Great Light, Jesus Christ “is sprung up”.

“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.” Matthew 4:16

The picture I had of people sitting in darkness feeling hopeless because of their sins brought tears of sadness.

My tears became tears of joy because these same people found hope and eternal life in Jesus Christ; the Great Light had entered into their lives.

Can you remember when the Great Light, Jesus Christ sprung up in your life?

I was once one of those people who sat in darkness. I smile with pleasure and with thanksgiving thinking on that glorious day when Jesus Christ saved me, a sinner.  On April 6, 1975, I changed from having a dark heart to having The Great Light, Jesus Christ living within my heart. On that glorious day, I sprung from hopelessness to Hope and my life sprung from night to Day. Light Sprung Up within my heart!

What about all those people who are still sitting in hopeless darkness?  “There are so many, Lord! Please give me a big heart to desire to get the Good News to those sitting in darkness.”

  1. When I (and my family) go out of the home, I try to remember to plan ahead by praying and taking along Gospel tracts. “Lord, put the same people in my path that need to get saved as would be in Jesus’ path if He were on this earth.” Note: Sad to say, I know I have missed opportunities, by not praying and planning.
  2. I approach others with a smile and a tract. The Lord gives me the Words for each person such as:
  • “I have the greatest news in the world!”
  • This is the best decision you will ever make!
  • Did you get one of these? Better than gold!
  • This changed my life and I want to share it with you!
  • You are so special, so I want to give this to you!”
  • Would you like to know for sure you are going to heaven?

Isn’t it wonderful sharing the Good News with those who are in darkness?  It is up to us to get the Gospel out and then God does the rest. He works in their hearts. “May Great Light spring up within the people we see today that sit in darkness.  May they trust Jesus Christ and spring from darkness to Light!”

Would anyone like to share their testimony about trusting Jesus?  I would love to hear about it 🙂

Better Than Eating World’s Finest Chocolate

My Bible

I admit it! I have a sweet tooth!

If a child is selling World’s Finest Chocolate, I will buy a box, or two, or … well, you get the idea.  God says the Bible is sweeter than World’s Finest Chocolate, actually, it says “honey”.

I crave desserts, especially chocolate.  I am supposed to crave the Bible. I once read the Bible daily out of duty only. Feeling ashamed, I asked the Lord to give me a love for His Word.  Because loving to read the Bible is God’s will for me, He changed me. Reading God’s Word is now something I daily crave.

When I feel a little down, dining on my favorite dessert chapters of the Bible becomes a sweet pick-me-up.  In the Old Testament, my favorite is Psalms, where I seek to be a lady after God’s own heart.  In the New Testament, my favorite is Philippians, because it is joyful.  Do you have favorite passages, chapters or books in the Bible?  Favorite Scriptures are an encouragement to one’s soul.

I also like to make lists. When I come to a passage in the Bible where I see a list, I get so thrilled.  Remember this is coming from someone who once read the Bible out of a sense of duty, but God gave me a love for His Word.

This morning, I read Psalm 19: 7-11 and out of those five verses, I found 15 reasons why we need to love God’s Word.

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.”

Reading the Bible is a two way conversation between God and me.

  1.  The Bible is perfect! “I am so grateful! Your Word meets my needs.”
  2.  The Bible converts the soul! “Thank you Lord for saving me.”
  3.  The Bible is sure! “You never fail me!”
  4.  The Bible makes wise the simple! “Lord, I ask for wisdom today.”
  5.  The Bible is right! “You are a just God.”
  6.  The Bible rejoices my heart! “I am too blessed to stay depressed.”
  7.  The Bible is pure! “Praise God! There are no mistakes!”
  8.  The Bible enlightens (brightens) my eyes! – “What a great facelift!”
  9.  The Bible endures forever! “Amen!”
  10.  The Bible is true! “I praise You for Your Faithfulness!”
  11.  The Bible is righteous! “Thank You for showing me how to live.”
  12.  The Bible is to be desired more than gold!  “Lord, let this be me.”
  13.  The Bible is sweeter than honey and the honeycomb! “I crave.”
  14.  The Bible gives us warnings in order to avoid danger! “Keep me alert.”
  15.  The Bible, when obeyed brings great reward!  “Lord, let this be me.”

Better than eating World’s Finest Chocolate is reading the World’s Finest Book, The Bible!
